Choosing a Pete Seeger Record

Pete Seeger on the Hudson RIver

It's not hard to find Pete Seeger records but it may be challenging deciding which one(s) to buy. He recorded literally hundreds of them, most of which are fairly easily available on CD. I highly recommend several live albums that capture him at the peak of his magical powers to transform an audience into a massive chorus and lead them through an amazingly varied, but seamless, program of songs and stories that inspire, move, teach, amuse and entertain:

- Pete Seeger at the Village Gate, Vol I and Vol II: A 1960 concert in which he is joined by Memphis Slim and Willie Dixon; Smithsonian Folkways Records.

- Pete Seeger: We Shall Overcome - The Complete Carnegie Hall Concert, Historic Live Recording, June 8, 1963. A concert that captures a moment of unbelievable optimism as the civil rights movement seems unstoppable and assassinations and a war in Vietnam are unimaginable; Columbia Records.
